After Hindus, Christian Community Targeted as 17 Homes Torched on Christmas Night in Bangladesh
Dhaka (The Uttam Hindu): Minorities continue to face threats in Bangladesh, with recent incidents highlighting persecution of Christians following similar attacks on Hindus. On Christmas night, unidentified miscreants set fire to 17 homes belonging to the Tripura community in the Bandarban district. The attack occurred while the residents were in a nearby village attending Christmas celebrations, as their village lacks a church.
According to reports, 17 out of 19 houses in the Tripura community were completely destroyed. Gangamani Tripura, one of the victims, expressed her shock and grief, stating, "Today was supposed to be our happiest day, but I never imagined something like this could happen on Christmas. We demand strict punishment for those responsible."
The Tripura community has lived in the Kundajiri area for generations but faced forcible eviction years ago. Locals claim the land was rented to the wife of a police officer, who served as the Inspector General of Police during the Awami League regime. Following their eviction, trees were planted on the land, further displacing the community.
