Punjab's Coldest Area Hits Chilling 1.6°C on January 9, IMD Issues Orange Alert as Thunderstorms Forecasted
Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): On January 9, 2025 the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Chandigarh confirmed that Adampur IAF recorded a biting cold temperature of 1.6°C, making it the coldest location in Punjab. This winter has brought severe cold conditions to the state with several districts enveloped in dense fog that has disrupted train and flight services. The IMD Chandigarh issued an orange alert for the region, forecasting continued dense to very dense fog in several areas, along with the persistence of cold wave conditions.
In addition to the ongoing cold wave, the IMD Chandigarh has also predicted thunderstorms in isolated areas of Punjab on January 11, indicating a potential intensification of the winter weather. The cold wave has been particularly harsh with temperatures plummeting across the state. Other cities have recorded significant low temperatures: Amritsar at 4.8°C, Ludhiana at 6.2°C, Patiala at 4.2°C, Pathankot at 3.3°C, Bathinda at 5°C and Faridkot at 2.6°C.
Adampur, located near the foothills of the Shivalik range, experiences particularly frigid winters due to its geographical position. The cold air descending from the mountains contributes to the lower temperatures, especially at night.
As the winter season continues to peak in Punjab, residents are advised to take necessary precautions against the cold weather and be prepared for possible thunderstorms later in the week. The IMD Chandigarh's warnings emphasize the ongoing challenges posed by the severe winter conditions in the region.
