Punjab to face 3-day bus strike as P.R.T.C and Punbus employees protest unmet demands

Update: 2025-01-05 10:41 GMT

Chandigarh(The Uttam Hindu): From January 6 to 8, government buses operated by P.R.T.C and Punbus in Punjab will remain off the roads due to a strike called by the bus drivers. The employees’ unions of P.R.T.C and Punbus have announced their protest, planning to demonstrate in front of the Chief Minister's residence in Chandigarh. This strike could cause significant inconvenience to the public.

Unmet demands

The Punbus Employees' Union stated that despite repeated assurances from ministers, no steps have been taken to address their demands. Although officials had promised to fulfill their requests, they have failed to take any action. As a result, the unions have decided to hold a three-day strike to press for their demands. The employees plan to protest outside the Chief Minister’s residence and express their frustration. The strike also includes plans to shut down bus stands, preventing private buses from entering.

Protest outside the Chief Minister's residence

The President of the P.R.T.C and Punbus Contract Workers Union of Punjab announced that, as per their schedule, employees of both organizations will be on strike from January 6 to 8. During this period, no buses will operate in any part of Punjab. Although the strike will affect the general public, union leaders have stated that they have no other option to make the government listen to their demands. On January 7, the union members will surround Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's residence in Sangrur.

Unfulfilled financial commitment

The P.R.T.C President shared that they currently have 1,100 buses and Punbus has about 600 buses. However, they claim that the Punjab government and senior officials are favoring private transport companies, which is leading to a continuous decline in the number of buses in the government fleet. Additionally, tourist buses which should only transport passengers from one location to another based on permits are allegedly picking up passengers outside bus stands under the influence of officials. The President also highlighted that the Punjab government has failed to pay the promised Rs. 600 for women’s free bus service and employees have not received their wages on time.
