Comedian Kunal Kamra Skips Mumbai Police Summons for Third Time
Mumbai (The Uttam Hindu): Comedian Kunal Kamra, who got into trouble for commenting on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde without naming him, did not appear before Mumbai's Khar Police on Saturday as well. Police officer said that this is the third time Kunal Kamra has not appeared despite summons being issued. Khar police station had issued two summons to Kunal Kamra earlier and asked him to appear for questioning, but Kamra did not appear.
According to information received from Khar police station in Mumbai, Kamra has not been in contact with the police since the second summons were sent. The first summons was issued to Kunal on March 25, for which Kunal had asked for time till April 2, but the police refused to give him time and issued him a second summons on March 27 and asked him to appear at Khar police station on March 31. Khar police has interrogated many people associated with Habitat Studio and recorded their statements. Interrogation of other people related to the case is going on.
Regarding not appearing before the police for questioning, Kamra told news agency IANS on phone on March 25 that he is currently out of Mumbai, due to which he could not appear before the police. He said that he needs a week's time to come to Mumbai and appear before the police.
Kunal Kamra shared a post on Instagram condemning the vandalism at the Habitat Club and said that he would not apologize for his remarks. The comedian was granted interim anticipatory bail by the Madras High Court on April 1. The court has granted him interim anticipatory bail till April 7 with conditions.
Kunal Kamra had sought interstate bail citing his residence in Tamil Nadu. Kamra had filed a petition in the High Court stating that he moved from Mumbai to Tamil Nadu in February 2021. He is a resident of Tamil Nadu. Along with this, he expressed concern about his safety. He said that after the recent demonstration in Mumbai, he is getting threats and he is worried about the case that Mumbai Police may arrest him.
