Alert for Netflix Users: 35 Phishing Scams, S$40,000 Lost – Protect Your Account Now!
New Delhi(The Uttam Hindu): Singapore has warned about phishing scams that are posing as official communications from Netflix, causing significant financial losses. There have been at least 35 reported cases since early October 2024, which adds up to more than S$40,000, or US$29,700.
In most such cases, the perpetrator will send emails claiming Netflix has run into problems about their subscriptions or with payment matters and that their accounts are suspended. Victims are instead asked to click on a link taking them to the phishing website, where they are prompted for sensitive information such as account details and credit card data. The fraudster then steals this information and proceeds to perpetrate unauthorized financial transactions. In most instances, victims are only known to have been victims when they notice questionable charges on their bank statements.
Authorities have made it clear that Netflix never asks for personal information like banking or credit card information through email or text. Moreover, Netflix has pointed out that it never asks for passwords or payment information through other websites. Users are advised to be cautious when receiving messages with unfamiliar links and not to enter their personal information on unverified sites. Anyone who suspects that they have been targeted in this manner should change the password of their Netflix account immediately and monitor their financial accounts closely.
