New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): A special exhibition in New Delhi is celebrating the legacy of renowned abstractionist Bimal Das Gupta. Titled **"Bimal Das Gupta: Tutelage – An Ode to a Legend"**, the two-day event showcases a remarkable collection of the artist's work, spanning six decades of his creative journey. The exhibition, currently hosted at Travancore House in the capital, is organized by **Dhoomimal Gallery** and **Gallery Silver Scapes**.

The exhibit highlights Das Gupta’s pioneering experiments with acrylics, watercolors, gouaches, and oil pastels, as well as his innovative combinations of various mediums. After developing an allergy to oil paints, Das Gupta expanded his artistic repertoire, which led to bold new approaches to abstraction. The exhibition runs until Sunday, November 10. Born in Bengal in 1917, Bimal Das Gupta initially gained fame as a landscape painter. His European travels sparked his interest in cubism, and he eventually embraced neo-tantrism before fully shifting to pure abstraction. Over the years, he became a key figure in India’s modern art scene, contributing to mural projects at international exhibitions in Tokyo and Moscow. His works were displayed extensively in India and abroad. Das Gupta's contributions were formally recognized when he was awarded by the **Sahitya Kala Parishad** in 1972 and elected a fellow of the **Lalit Kala Akademi** in 1989.

Das Gupta tragically passed away in a car accident in 1995, along with his children, which led to his works fading from public memory. However, in recent years, his art has been making a comeback in auctions, reflecting a renewed appreciation of his legacy. This exhibition offers an opportunity to rediscover his influence and celebrate his bold approach to abstraction. According to **Uday Jain**, director of **Dhoomimal Gallery**, the exhibition serves as a much-needed tribute to one of India’s foremost abstractionists. "We are proud to restore his legacy with this show, curated by Archana Khare-Ghose," Jain added.
