Delhi in a Cloud of Smog: GRAP Level 3 Restrictions Reintroduced
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Pollution levels in the capital city, Delhi, have started to escalate once again, prompting authorities to re-impose restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Level 3.
Recent reports indicate a significant rise in the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi, with the AQI reaching 371 by 4 PM, falling under the "very poor" category. In response to the worsening pollution levels, the Central Air Quality Management Commission has enforced GRAP Level 3 restrictions. These measures were previously lifted in December after an improvement in air quality, when GRAP Level 4 and then Level 3 restrictions were relaxed.
According to weather forecasts, adverse weather conditions could cause further deterioration of the air quality, prompting officials to take immediate action. The Air Quality Management Commission has directed authorities in Delhi-NCR to implement GRAP Level 3 restrictions to prevent the situation from worsening further. Key measures under the re-imposed GRAP Level 3 restrictions include halting non-essential construction activities. Additionally, schools for classes 5 and above will operate in a hybrid mode. The use of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles is also restricted in Delhi-NCR, although exemptions are provided for individuals with disabilities.
The GRAP Level 3 restrictions, which had been lifted just last Friday, are now back in place as part of ongoing efforts to combat rising pollution levels in the city.
