New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Amid the ongoing Delhi Assembly elections, the Congress party has established a special task force called the ‘EAGLE Group’ to keep a close watch on electoral irregularities. According to a letter issued by the party, the Congress president has immediately constituted this empowered group with the primary objective of overseeing the conduct of free and fair elections.

Congress forms ‘EAGLE Group’ amid Delhi elections—here’s its purposeThe first assignment for this group is to investigate allegations of voter list manipulation in Maharashtra and submit a comprehensive report to the party high command as soon as possible.

The group’s agenda extends beyond Maharashtra’s voter list investigation, aiming to analyze irregularities in past elections across various states and address concerns regarding the fairness of upcoming polls. This group will meticulously examine these issues, gather relevant facts, and work towards enhancing transparency and credibility in the electoral process. Ultimately, a detailed report will be prepared based on the collected information and presented to the party’s high command.

During the Maharashtra Assembly elections held late last year, a fierce contest took place between the ruling coalition—comprising the BJP, Shinde faction of Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP—and the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance, which included Congress, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, and Sharad Pawar’s NCP. The election results saw the BJP emerge as the largest party, following which opposition parties raised concerns over alleged voter list discrepancies. A formal complaint was lodged with the Election Commission, which later responded to the claims.

Previously, Congress had also raised concerns about alleged irregularities in the Haryana Assembly elections, questioning the credibility of EVMs. However, the Election Commission systematically dismissed all allegations and advised the party accordingly. In Delhi, voting for the ongoing elections is scheduled for February 5, with results to be announced on February 8. Congress’ formation of the ‘EAGLE Group’ ahead of the elections is seen as a proactive step to monitor potential discrepancies in the electoral process. The party maintains that this move is crucial to ensuring the integrity of the democratic process and promoting transparency in elections.
