Syria's Future in Flux: Rebel Forces Overthrow Assad, Plane Disappears Amid Crisis
Syria (The Uttam Hindu): Syria is witnessing a dramatic shift in power as rebel forces claim to have overthrown President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. According to multiple media reports, the rebel groups have entered the capital Damascus from all directions engaging in fierce battles near the Presidential Palace. They have taken control of key locations including the Damascus International Airport and the army headquarters.
Sources suggest that Assad accompanied by his brother Maher al-Assad fled the country shortly after the rebels entered the capital. It is believed that he may have left for Russia or Tehran though no official confirmation has been provided. Reports indicate that Assad boarded a Russian cargo plane but his plane has since disappeared from radar, adding to the mystery of his escape.
As the rebel forces solidified their grip on Damascus Syrian soldiers reportedly fearful of rebel retaliation abandoned their uniforms and fled the city. Numerous soldiers were seen in plain clothes further signaling the collapse of Assad's once-powerful military.
In a video statement, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi Jalali confirmed he would remain in Syria and work toward a smooth transition of power. Despite the chaos he urged for a peaceful resolution. Meanwhile, the rebels with backing from both the U.S. and Iran declared the fall of Assad's regime and appealed to the people of Syria for unity in the face of uncertain times. They emphasized that no single party would dominate the country moving forward.
The rebels have also freed prisoners from Sednaya prison and reported casualties, with two civilians killed by Assad's forces during protests in Douma. In the strategic city of Homs, fierce fighting continues but Assad's forces have already fled, emboldening the rebels. With the Assad regime crumbling Syria faces an uncertain future, as the country grapples with the aftermath of a long-running conflict and a rapidly changing political landscape.
