Supreme Court’s Stern Warning: Husbands Who Misbehave May Face Andaman Jail
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Cases related to domestic violence and divorce frequently come before courts across the country. However, in a recent case, the Supreme Court took a firm stand that has sparked widespread discussion. A woman facing domestic violence approached the apex court, seeking justice. While attempting to reconcile the couple, the court issued a stern warning to the husband, stating that any further misbehavior towards his wife would result in imprisonment in the country’s most dangerous Andaman jail with no court allowed to grant him bail. In response, the husband has submitted an affidavit pledging good behavior.
According to reports, Supreme Court Justices Surya Kant and NK Singh interacted with the woman from Maharajganj, Uttar Pradesh, in Hindi for over 20 minutes. During the conversation, she described the torture she endured while living with her husband. She firmly stated that she no longer wished to stay with him, recounting a horrific incident where he allegedly tried to set her on fire. The woman expressed her fears, saying, "If I go back to him, he will kill me. What will the court do then? What will happen to my two small children?"
In response, Justice Surya Kant issued a strong warning to the husband, emphasizing that any further complaints of mistreatment would result in his transfer to Andaman jail with strict orders preventing any court from granting him bail. The judge reminded the husband of his responsibility, stating, "When you marry someone, it is your duty to treat your wife with respect." This landmark remark by the Supreme Court has sent a powerful message against domestic violence, reinforcing the need for accountability and protection for victims.
