Mother Kills Son Just Before His Birthday, Reason Stuns Police

United States (The Uttam Hindu): A Michigan mother has been charged with murdering her son just hours before his 18th birthday. The accused, 39-year-old Katie Lee, allegedly told police that her son, Austin Dean Pikaart, wanted to end his life and had asked for her help. Authorities responded to a domestic incident at Lee’s home on February 21, where they found her holding a knife. She was subdued with a Taser before officers discovered Austin’s body inside the apartment.  

According to court documents, Lee called 911 and admitted she had been "trying for a while" to stop her son from breathing. She allegedly stated that they had attempted a drug overdose together, but when Austin lost consciousness, she used a knife to cut his throat and arm. During a court hearing, a detective testified that Lee claimed her son feared turning 18 and wanted to die. She also allegedly told officers she wished they would kill her so she could be with him.  

Lee has been charged with open murder and resisting arrest. She pleaded not guilty, and her bail request was denied. She is scheduled to appear in court again on March 4. Meanwhile, tributes have poured in for Austin, who was remembered as a kind-hearted and intelligent young man with a deep love for books, science, and helping others.
