Justice Varma Took Oath As Allahabad HC Judge Amid Cash Recovery Row: Appointment Challenged In Lucknow HC
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Justice Yashwant Varma took oath as a judge of the Allahabad High Court on April 5, 2025, despite an ongoing investigation into allegations of unaccounted cash found at his Delhi residence. The ceremony was held privately in the Chief Justice's chamber and Varma's name has been added to the seniority list of judges on the High Court's official website.
Background of the Controversy
A fire broke out at Varma's Delhi residence on March 14, 2025, during Holi festivities, leading to the discovery of a significant amount of unaccounted cash, estimated at Rs 15 crore. The incident sparked allegations of corruption, prompting the Chief Justice of India to initiate an internal investigation.
Investigation and Transfer
A three-judge panel has been formed to investigate the allegations, and Varma has denied any wrongdoing, labeling the allegations a "conspiracy" to tarnish his reputation. The Supreme Court Collegium recommended Varma's transfer to the Allahabad High Court, which was accepted by the Central Government on March 28, 2025.
Reaction from the Bar Association
The Allahabad High Court Bar Association protested Varma's transfer, demanding his impeachment rather than a mere transfer. The association went on an indefinite strike, which was later suspended after a delegation met with the Law Minister in Delhi.
Current Status
Varma will not be assigned any judicial work until the investigation is complete, as per the Chief Justice of India's directive. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Lucknow Bench of the High Court, challenging Varma's oath-taking and the Central Government's notification regarding his transfer.
