India Refuses Extradition of Sheikh Hasina Amid Diplomatic Pressure from Bangladesh

Update: 2024-12-27 06:13 GMT

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In a tense geopolitical development, India has declined to respond to Bangladesh's interim government's diplomatic demand for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina has been in India since the coup on August 5, which ousted her government. She was transported to Ghaziabad’s Hindon Airbase by Air Force helicopter and is believed to be residing in Delhi.

No Extradition Consideration

Sources indicate that India is not considering sending Sheikh Hasina back, despite diplomatic notes from the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus. India’s decision is shaped by several factors, including the absence of a clause in the India-Bangladesh extradition treaty covering political personalities.

Additionally, India recognizes Sheikh Hasina's strategic importance, given her 15-year tenure marked by curbing fundamentalist forces, resolving border issues, and fostering bilateral trade. Indian officials believe she could regain power in Bangladesh, making her presence in India geopolitically significant.

**A History of Hospitality**

India’s tradition of providing refuge to political figures further strengthens its stance. The country famously granted asylum to the Dalai Lama and thousands of Tibetans, a legacy it continues with Sheikh Hasina. Her son and daughter have also previously lived in India, making it a natural haven for her after leaving Bangladesh.

**Diplomatic Impasse**

The interim Bangladeshi government, with limited leverage, has resorted to diplomatic notes as its primary means of pressure. However, India is expected to delay any formal decision, citing consideration of the extradition request.

Sheikh Hasina’s presence in India is anticipated to influence Bangladeshi politics from afar, with hopes of her eventual return to power. For now, India stands firm, prioritizing its strategic interests and historical ties over immediate diplomatic demands.

This development underscores the delicate balance in India-Bangladesh relations and highlights India’s long-standing role in providing refuge to key political figures.
