Ex-Miss India Shivankita Dixit Falls Victim to Cyber Scam, Scammed of ₹99,000
Kolkata(The Uttam Hindu): In a shocking incident, former Femina Miss India West Bengal, Shivankita Dixit, was digitally arrested and scammed of ₹99,000 by cybercriminals posing as CBI officials. The incident took place on Tuesday when Dixit, a makeup artist and model, received a WhatsApp call from a person claiming to be a CBI officer.
The caller told Dixit that she had an account opened at a HDFC bank branch in Delhi with her Aadhaar card details. He blamed her for money laundering and for taking ransom money for kidnapping of several children. He reassured her that she was unwittingly being used by a criminal gang, and that CBI required her to catch them.
The caller then initiated a video call during which police officers were seen behind him. He asked her to lock up her room and not speak about the matter to her family members. Under coercion from the threat of serious charges, Shivankita transferred ₹99,000 to the scammer's bank account.
She came to realize only after the call had been put an end that she was tricked. When she called the number back, it had a message saying it had switched off. Dixit right away informed her father, Sanjay Dixit. A complaint has been lodged at Cyber Crime Cell and has complained of the incident through the helpline 1930. Shivankita Dixit, the Femina Miss India West Bengal winner in 2017, is also currently working as a makeup artist and is still engaged in modeling. The authorities have already started probing into this issue, and the public is cautioned to be aware of the same scam.
This startling incident reflects how cybercrimes are becoming ever more sophisticated with regard to targeting celebrities. This also calls for constant vigil in today's digital world.
