Denmark Rejects Trump’s Idea: ‘Greenland Will Never Be a Part of America’
Oslo (The Uttam Hindu): Denmark has rejected US President Donald Trump's fresh bid to annex Greenland into the US. Trump on Wednesday declared that his administration would "strongly support" the right of the people of Greenland to determine their own future. He said, "And if you want, we welcome you to the United States."
Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen clarified Denmark's position on Trump's statement and said that Greenland's future will be decided only by its people. She said, "Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland. This is a stance that we support very strongly on behalf of the Danish government."
Greenland's Prime Minister Mut Egede also completely rejected Trump's claim. He wrote on social media that the people of Greenland do not wish to be a part of America. Denmark's Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen also reiterated this and said, "Greenland will never be a part of America."
Greenland, the world's largest island, was a Danish colony until 1953. It then became an integral part of Denmark and Greenlanders gained Danish citizenship. Greenland gained self-rule in 1979, but Denmark retained authority over its foreign and defense policy. This is not the first time Trump has talked about making Greenland a part of the US. Earlier too, Denmark had rejected the idea and said that Greenland is not for sale.
Greenland's Prime Minister Egede reiterated on Wednesday that the people of Greenland will decide their own future and they do not want to be either Danish or American. He posted on Facebook, "We do not want to be either American, or Danish, we are Kalaallit (Greenlanders). Americans and their leaders must understand this."
