New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to appoint a new national president following the Delhi Assembly elections. According to sources, the election for the party's president is expected to take place between February 10 and February 20. Current BJP president JP Nadda, whose term ended in January 2024 will continue to lead the party through the Delhi polls. His tenure was extended by a year to ensure stability during the Lok Sabha elections.

The process for BJP’s organisational elections is underway with members of the National Council and State Councils being elected. At least 50% of the state units must complete their organisational elections before the national president's election. As of now, only four states have completed the process of electing their state presidents. Party leaders have assured that the organisational elections are progressing on schedule and will be completed in time.

The selection of the new BJP president will require the approval of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat. While no official announcement has been made several names are being speculated. Among the frontrunners are Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Shivraj Singh Chauhan and party general secretary Vinod Tawde. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh's name is also being discussed. Additionally, the names of Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Bhupendra Yadav both considered close to Amit Shah, are seen as strong contenders. Both leaders were in contention during the previous organisational elections which ultimately saw JP Nadda assume the role. The party’s constitution mandates that only members with at least 15 years of association can be considered for the position.
