Railway Minister: Menu and Rate List Must Be Displayed, QR Code to Be Added on Food Packets

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Efforts are being made by the Railways to provide better facilities to the passengers. Now it is necessary to display the menu of food available in trains and the rate list of the dishes included in it. Giving this information in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that this is mandatory.

The Railway Minister said that it is necessary to display the menu and rates of food in the trains, passengers should have access to menu cards, rate lists and digital alerts giving details of food prices. He said that the menu and rates of all food items are available on the IRCTC website for the information of passengers traveling in trains. Besides, all these details are made available with the waiters present in the train and are given to passengers on demand.

Ashwini Vaishnav said that apart from displaying the rate list in pantry cars, passengers now also get SMS alerts with links to the menu and tariff for better transparency. The Railway Minister said that these SMS have been started to make passengers aware about the menu and rates of food services in Indian Railways.

The Railway Minister further said that to maintain hygiene, food safety supervisors have also been deployed in base kitchens to monitor cleanliness and handling and these on-board supervisors oversee food services in trains. Apart from this, passengers can confirm everything from the name of the kitchen to the date of packaging through QR codes on the food packets served in trains.
