Referee David Coote fired over offensive language and betting controversy
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Premier League referee David Coote has had his contract terminated by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) due to a serious breach of his employment terms. This follows an investigation into his conduct after a video showed him using offensive language about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. Coote, 42, had been suspended on November 11. PGMOL's statement confirmed that Coote's actions were unacceptable and that his position was no longer tenable.
In addition to this, Coote is under investigation for his involvement in a possible betting scandal. The inquiry centers on a yellow card he gave to Leeds United player Ezgjan Alioski in a 2019 match against West Bromwich Albion. Text messages suggest Coote discussed giving the card before the match, but there is no evidence of financial wrongdoing. Coote is also reportedly being investigated for an incident where he was filmed using drugs while in Germany for the 2024 European Championship.
