New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Justice Sanjiv Khanna, a senior judge of the Supreme Court, is set to take oath as the 51st Chief Justice of India on Monday at Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath at 10 AM. Justice Khanna’s appointment follows the retirement of outgoing Chief Justice Dhananjay Yashwant Chandrachud, who steps down on Sunday, paving the way for his successor. Justice Khanna will serve a tenure of six months as the Chief Justice of India. The Government of India issued an official notification recently confirming Justice Khanna's appointment. The Ministry of Law and Justice stated that President Murmu, under Clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution, has appointed Justice Khanna to the nation's highest judicial position.

Born on May 14, 1960, Justice Khanna began his legal career in 1983 as an advocate with the Delhi Bar Council. Over the years, he has developed expertise across various legal domains, including constitutional law, taxation, arbitration, commercial law, and environmental law. He also served as the senior standing counsel for the Income Tax Department, representing the National Capital Territory of Delhi. On Friday, outgoing CJI DY Chandrachud delivered an emotional farewell speech, reflecting on his tenure. "There is no greater feeling than being able to serve those in need," said CJI Chandrachud, who recounted his journey from a law student to the head of the Supreme Court. He expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve the nation and noted the immense personal and professional growth he experienced during his time in office.
