New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): China is not backing down from its expansionist policy. While talks are being held to de-escalate tensions with India along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), China is strategically settling villages in the border region of Bhutan. Satellite images have revealed that in the past eight years, China has established at least 22 villages in Bhutan’s traditional territory, with eight of these villages constructed near the Doklam Plateau after 2020.

These villages are located in a valley near Doklam, which China claims as part of its territory. Several of these villages are situated close to Chinese military outposts. The construction of these villages is a matter of concern for India, as they could pose a threat to the security of the Siliguri Corridor (Chicken’s Neck).

The Ministry of External Affairs of India has not yet issued an official statement on this matter. Meanwhile, former Prime Minister of Bhutan, Lotay Tshering, stated in 2023 that these Chinese settlements are not in Bhutan, although the Bhutanese government has not released an official response. Since 2016, China has built 22 villages in Bhutan, with approximately 7,000 people residing in them. These villages are believed to be part of China’s territorial expansion strategy. These activities by China are raising concerns for both India and Bhutan, as they could have serious implications for regional stability and security. India will need to strengthen its strategy on this issue and work with Bhutan to face China’s pressure.
