J&K CM Unveils Akhal Bridge Over Sindh River, Project Launched in 2008 Now Complete
Himachal (The Uttam Hindu): On Saturday, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the 82-meter-long Akhal Bridge over the Sindh River in Kangan, marking a significant improvement in transportation and economic activities for the region. Built at a cost of approximately eight crores, the bridge connects Kunmul-Akhal and several nearby villages. During the inauguration, the Chief Minister highlighted that the bridge would greatly enhance transportation, foster economic growth, and improve the overall quality of life for thousands of residents in the district. The local community, including representatives and residents, expressed their gratitude to the Chief Minister for addressing their long-standing demand.
Present at the inauguration were Kangan MLA Mian Mehar Ali, Ganderbal DDC member, Deputy Commissioner, Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department (R&B), and senior citizens.
The foundation stone for the Akhal Bridge was laid in 2008, but construction faced delays due to slow progress and intermittent work stoppages. The project was further complicated when the existing steel bridge, which had been used for traffic, was declared unsafe. This made access difficult, especially in emergencies, such as fire incidents, as fire brigade vehicles had trouble reaching the area. The completion of the Akhal Bridge has now resolved these longstanding issues and promises to bring much-needed relief to the local population.
