New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Instagram, a widely popular photo and video sharing app now faces competition from a new app called Pixelfed. Designed to closely resemble Instagram, Pixelfed offers enhanced user control over data and content. This app claims to provide better privacy controls and unique features, raising curiosity about whether it can surpass Instagram in terms of functionality, tools and privacy.

Pixelfed operates on decentralized networks like ActivityPub, similar to platforms such as Mastodon. This allows users to share photos, follow others and chat while ensuring their data isn't stored on centralized servers. The app connects to Foodiverse and supports simultaneous communication among users. Its interface mirrors Instagram, making it familiar and easy to use but with a stronger focus on user privacy.

The app’s launch comes amid Meta’s stricter content moderation policies, which have reportedly led to temporary blocking of Pixelfed links on Facebook. Pixelfed’s creator, Daniel Supernault, who also developed an alternative to TikTok called Loops, aims to provide users with options beyond mainstream platforms. Available on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store, Pixelfed is gaining attention as a promising alternative to Instagram and TikTok.
