PM Modi Conferred With Srilanka's Highest Non Civilian Honour MITRA VIBHUSHANA
Colombo/New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is conferred with Mitra Vibhushana honour by Srilankan President. PM Modi expressed his gratitude and stated that the honour was recognition to 140 crore Indians and thanked the Srilankan government for their warm hospitality. PM Modi is on a three day visit to Srilanka from April 4 to 6, his first visit since 2019. This is the 22nd international honour given to Prime Minister Modi.
What is the Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana Award?
The Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana is the highest non-civilian award in Sri Lanka, given to foreign dignitaries with whom the country shares strong, friendly relations. The honor consists of a silver medal adorned with nine gems representing Sri Lanka, and symbols such as a sheaf of rice, moon, sun, earth and lotus. Introduced in 2008, it has been bestowed upon prominent foreign leaders as a mark of strong diplomatic ties.
Strengthening Defense and Energy Cooperation
During the visit, several key agreements were made, including a defense cooperation agreement between India and Sri Lanka, marking a significant step in enhancing bilateral defense relations. In another significant move, India and Sri Lanka agreed to develop Trincomalee as an energy hub, furthering cooperation in the renewable energy sector. A notable highlight was the virtual inauguration of the Sampur Solar Energy Project, symbolizing the growing partnership in the clean energy sector.
Trilateral Cooperation with UAE
Additionally, a trilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between India, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates, showcasing growing cooperation in multiple sectors.
Historic Ceremonial Welcome at Independence Square
PM Modi's visit was marked by a grand ceremonial welcome at Independence Square in Colombo, the site of Sri Lanka’s National Day celebrations. This is the first time Sri Lanka has honored a visiting leader in such a manner. Independence Square, named after the historic Independence Memorial Hall, was the venue for this momentous occasion, reflecting the deepening ties between the two nations. This state visit marks a new chapter in India-Sri Lanka relations, reinforcing mutual cooperation in defense, energy, and various other sectors.
