New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Prayagraj police arrested a Delhi man, Ashok Kumar for the brutal murder of his wife, Meenakshi at a homestay during the Maha Kumbh festival. The couple hailing from Trilokpuri had traveled to Prayagraj under the pretense of a religious pilgrimage. Ashok, who was involved in an extramarital affair had been plotting the murder for months. On the night of February 18 after checking into a guesthouse he attacked Meenakshi in the bathroom slitting her throat with a sharp weapon before fleeing. The next morning the homestay manager discovered her blood-soaked body and alerted the police.

Investigators circulated Meenakshi’s photographs in newspapers and on social media leading to her identification by relatives. Her sons and brother rushed to Prayagraj where they confirmed her identity at the Jhunsi police station. Ashok, in an attempt to mislead his children had called them on February 19, claiming their mother had gone missing in the crowded fair. However, his story raised suspicions prompting the family to search for her themselves. Meanwhile, police analyzed CCTV footage forensic evidence and Ashok’s inconsistent statements, leading to his eventual arrest.

During interrogation, Ashok admitted to the crime, confessing that he wanted to eliminate his wife to continue his illicit relationship. He meticulously planned the murder creating an alibi by recording and sharing videos of their visit to Maha Kumbh. On the night of the murder, after disposing of evidence he attempted to portray himself as a worried husband. However, his deception unraveled under police scrutiny, and he was taken into custody. Authorities continue to investigate further details related to the case.
