Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: Mamata Government Challenges Court’s Decision, Seeks Convict’s Hanging
Kolkata (The Uttam Hindu): The West Bengal government has challenged the decision of the Sealdah court in the Calcutta High Court in the case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The Sealdah court on Monday sentenced the convict Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment (imprisonment till death), against which the state government has now knocked the door of the High Court.
Advocate General Kishore Dutta, on behalf of the government, has filed a petition and demanded the court to award death penalty to the convict Sanjay Roy. He said that the life sentence given to the convict is not enough.
On Monday, Sanjay was presented in the court amid tight security. The parents of the deceased were also present. During the hearing, Sanjay once again claimed to be innocent and alleged that he was framed. Before pronouncing the sentence, the judge gave Sanjay a chance to speak for the last time and asked him if his family members had contacted him, to which Sanjay replied 'no'.
This case is related to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College, which shocked the entire state. Now it remains to be seen what decision the High Court gives in this case.
