Female Minister Resigns After Relationship With 15-Year-Old Revealed

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): An Icelandic government minister, Ásthildur Lóa Þórsdóttir, has resigned after it was revealed she had a relationship with a 15-year-old boy 30 years ago, which resulted in the birth of a child. Þórsdóttir, now 58, disclosed in an interview that the relationship began when she was 22 and working as a counselor in a religious group, where she met the boy.

Their child was born when he was 16 and she was 23. While the age of consent in Iceland is 15, sexual relations with those under 18 are illegal, carrying potential prison sentences. Upon learning of the situation, Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir promptly facilitated Þórsdóttir's resignation. Þórsdóttir acknowledged the past, stating she would handle the situation differently today, given the passage of time. The secret nature of their past relationship has now come to the light, bringing with it political and societal consequences.
