New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): A dispute broke out during the Shimga procession in Rajapur, Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, on the occasion of Holi. The incident occurred when some participants in the procession attempted to push the gate of a mosque, sparking tension. A video of the altercation went viral, prompting the police to register an FIR on charges of sloganeering and illegal gathering.

Details of the Incident

The Shimga procession, held annually in Rajapur, involves a traditional march from the village to the Dhopeshwar temple. Part of the procession includes carrying a large wooden trunk (madachi miravnuk), which is typically placed on the steps of the mosque. However, this year, some individuals attempted to push open the gate of the mosque, escalating tensions in the area.

Political Reactions

Shiv Sena leader Nilesh Rane weighed in, suggesting that the incident occurred because the mosque's gate was closed and that it was being unnecessarily magnified. In contrast, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi condemned the incident, questioning the state government’s handling of law and order under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Police Action

The Rajapur police have registered an FIR against unidentified individuals under Section 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act for unlawful assembly. While investigations are ongoing, the police have assured the public that the situation in Ratnagiri is currently peaceful.
