Delhi Experiences Unusual January Heat, Breaks 6-Year Temperature Record
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): January, typically known for its biting cold in Delhi has taken an unexpected turn this year. Instead of the usual chill, residents are experiencing unseasonal warmth. On Sunday, January 19 the maximum temperature in Delhi soared to its highest for the month, making it feel more like spring than the coldest month of the year. The temperature reached 26 degrees Celsius prompting many to shed their sweaters in the bright afternoon sunshine.
Warmest January Day in Six Years
This is the highest January temperature recorded in Delhi in six years. The last time the mercury climbed higher was on January 21, 2019 when the city recorded a maximum temperature of 28.7 degrees Celsius. While Sunday’s afternoon warmth was notable, the evening brought back a hint of winter chill. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) this unseasonal warmth is due to a change in wind patterns caused by a western disturbance.
Pitampura Tops the Heat Chart
Pitampura emerged as the warmest area in Delhi on Sunday with a maximum temperature of 26.8 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 12.1 degrees Celsius. The IMD predicts similar weather conditions for Monday and Tuesday with temperatures expected to range between 11 degrees Celsius (minimum) and 26 degrees Celsius (maximum).
Weather Changes Ahead
However, relief from the warmth may be on the horizon. The IMD has issued a rain alert for January 22 and 23 which could bring temperatures down again. Foggy conditions are also likely on January 24 and 25 marking another shift in Delhi's unpredictable winter weather. Residents can expect a mix of warm days and chilly nights in the coming week as the city’s weather continues to oscillate.
