CARNEY VS TRUMP: Canada's New Prime Minister Vows to Continue Tariffs Until US Respects Canada
Ottawa (The Uttam Hindu ): Mark Carney has won the race for the post of Prime Minister of Canada. He will replace Justin Trudeau. Carney will take charge of the country at a time when US President Donald Trump has waged a trade war against Ottawa. The former governor of Canada's central bank and the Bank of England defeated three rivals by a huge margin in the Liberal Party leadership contest on Sunday. Carney has not served in any elected position till now. Carney will take oath as Prime Minister in the coming days and will lead the Liberal Party in the next general election. According to media reports, 59-year-old Carney spent most of his victory speech attacking Trump. He said, Americans should not have any misunderstanding. Like hockey, in trade too, Canada will win. Let us tell you that the US President has been attacking Canada for a long time. He has many times called Canada the 51st state of America and its Prime Minister the governor of the state.
Trump imposed 25 tariffs on Canadian imports to try to bend Ottawa to his will, though he later suspended some of them. Canada retaliated with tariffs. Trudeau accused his US counterpart of trying to destroy the country's economy. Carney said in his victory speech that Trump was "attacking Canadian workers, families and businesses. We cannot let him succeed," he said. According to Carney, his government will continue tariffs on US imports 'until the Americans respect us'. In response to Trump's claim to make Canada the 51st US state, Carney said, Canada will never be a part of the US, in any way. He said, "Americans want our resources, our water, our land, our country. He said, these are dark days, dark days imposed by a country that we can no longer trust. The Liberal leadership race began in January when Trudeau resigned after nearly a decade in office. He was under immense pressure to step down due to his deep unpopularity among voters frustrated by the housing crisis and rising cost of living. Trudeau warned during his farewell address to his Liberal Party on Sunday that Canada faces an “existential challenge” and “economic crisis” from the United States.
