Bombay High Court Shields Kunal Kamra from Arrest — With a Catch

Mumbai (The Uttam Hindu): Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has got relief from the Bombay High Court in the case of commenting on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde without naming him. The court has banned Kamra's arrest. The Bombay High Court ordered the Mumbai Police not to arrest him in the FIR registered against him for his 'traitor' comment.

Along with this, the Mumbai Police has also got permission from the court to question Kunal Kamra in Chennai. Now the Mumbai Police will go to Chennai and record Kamra's statement with the help of the local police.

This order has been given by a bench of Justice Sarang Kotwal and SM Modak. The bench said that the petitioner will not be arrested in the case registered in Khar. But the investigation of the case can continue. The investigating agency can complete Kamra's statement with the help of local police in Chennai.

Earlier on April 8, the Bombay High Court had heard Kamra's petition seeking quashing of the FIR lodged against him. The High Court granted protection to Kunal till April 16 and issued notices to all government parties seeking their response.

Kamra had sought quashing of the FIR registered against him on the grounds of fundamental right to freedom of expression and right to life under Articles 19 and 21 of the Indian Constitution.

Let us tell you, three separate cases are registered against Kunal Kamra in Khar Police Station of Mumbai. In all these three cases, complaints under Zero FIR from various places of Maharashtra have been transferred to Khar Police Station of Mumbai. These FIRs were registered from Buldhana, Nashik and Thane districts and now they are being investigated by Khar Police Station of Mumbai.

According to Mumbai Police, Kamra is accused of making objectionable comments against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. In this regard, Kunal Kamra was called for questioning three times, but he did not appear at the police station. Khar Police has questioned many people associated with Habitat Studio and recorded their statements. Interrogation of other people related to the case is going on.
