3 Killed, 110 Arrested in Murshidabad Over Waqf Law Protests; BJP Moves High Court Seeking Central Forces Deployment
Kolkata (The Uttam Hindu): Violent protests were witnessed in many districts of West Bengal on Friday against the Waqf law, in which the most violence took place in the Muslim-dominated Murshidabad district. Three people have lost their lives in this violence. According to the information received, the blood-soaked bodies of a father and son have been recovered from a house in Shamsherganj area of Murshidabad district. Injury marks have been found on many places on their bodies. At the same time, a teenager died after being shot at a place called Suti.
Police arrested 110 people on Saturday in connection with the violent incident in Murshidabad. During the violence on Friday, protesters set several vehicles on fire, including a police van. Security forces were also pelted with stones and roads were blocked. More than 15 policemen have been injured in this violence, while many others are also reported to be injured.
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has expressed concern, calling the situation in Murshidabad uncontrollable. He said that the situation is extremely serious and has gone out of the control of the state administration. Adhikari has filed a petition in the High Court demanding deployment of central forces in the violence-hit areas, which will be heard by a special bench of two judges this evening. On the other hand, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has appealed to all citizens to maintain peace. At the same time, the police administration has advised people not to get provoked in any way.
