Mumbai (The Uttam Hindu): Jiya Rai, a 16-year-old with autism spectrum disorder and daughter of an Indian Navy sailor, has made history by successfully swimming across the 34-km English Channel in 17 hours and 25 minutes. She is now the world's youngest female para swimmer to achieve this feat solo.

Jiya completed the challenging swim from Abbots Cliff, England, to Pointe de la Courte-Dune, France, between July 28 and 29, 2024. Her father, Madan Rai, stated that she dedicated this achievement to raising awareness about autism, and in recognition of her efforts, the English Channel Sea Swimming 2024 (July 21-28) was dedicated to autism awareness.

Jiya is the first female swimmer with autism to complete a solo crossing in the 150-year history of English Channel swimming. The swim is considered one of the most demanding endurance challenges, with dangerous currents, jellyfish, and water temperatures of 18°C, posing risks such as hypothermia. The Channel Swimming Association regulations prohibit swimmers from exiting the water or contacting their support crew, with sustenance provided only through an extended pole from the boat.

For her exceptional performance, Jiya was honored with the Adaptive Performance of the Year award. She has also received prestigious recognitions, including the National Award of Disability (2023) and the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar (2022), India’s highest honor for individuals under 18.

Jiya Rai’s remarkable journey serves as an inspiration, proving that determination and perseverance can overcome any challenge.
