Accra (The Uttam Hindu): A massive fire broke out at the Kantamanto Market in Accra Ghana's capital in the early hours of Thursday causing widespread destruction. The fire quickly spread across the market which is home to a variety of goods including secondhand clothing, building materials, chemicals, paint and furniture. Traders were seen desperately attempting to salvage their goods as the flames ravaged numerous shops.

Despite the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) deploying at least 13 fire tenders the fire proved difficult to control due to its rapid spread and the lack of working fire hydrants in the area. Residents joined the firefighting efforts using buckets and basic tools to help slow down the fire. The fire destroyed over 100 stores with the proximity of the shops making it easier for the blaze to spread. While the fire caused significant damage authorities were able to save a number of shops from the flames. Investigations have been launched to determine the cause of the fire. The Kantamanto Market, one of Ghana's largest, is a key economic hub and serves as a livelihood for thousands of families. Thankfully no casualties have been reported.
