Sri Lanka Releases 14 Indian Fishermen During PM Modi's Visit to Strengthen Ties

Colombo(The Uttam Hindu): In a significant diplomatic gesture, Sri Lanka released 14 Indian fishermen on Sunday, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the island nation. The release followed productive discussions between PM Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Saturday, where the long-standing issue of Indian fishermen's arrests was addressed. During a joint press briefing, Prime Minister Modi emphasized, "We discussed the fishermen's concerns and agreed to approach the matter with a humane perspective. We stressed the immediate release of the fishermen and their boats." The arrest of Indian fishermen, mostly from Tamil Nadu, by Sri Lankan authorities for allegedly poaching in Sri Lankan waters has been a recurring issue in bilateral relations.
As of 2025, 119 Indian fishermen and 16 fishing boats have reportedly been detained by Sri Lankan forces, triggering concerns among coastal communities and calls for diplomatic intervention. Following the talks, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced, "We’ve been informed that the Sri Lankan authorities have decided to release 11 fishermen shortly, with potentially more to follow in the coming days." Misri further highlighted that the issue was thoroughly discussed by both sides, with an emphasis on adopting a humanitarian and collaborative approach, recognizing the impact of these arrests on the livelihoods of fishermen on both sides.
The release of the 14 fishermen took place alongside other key diplomatic developments during PM Modi’s visit, including the joint inauguration of India-backed infrastructure projects like the upgraded Maho-Omanthai railway track and the new signalling system for the Maho-Anuradhapura segment. In a historic move, PM Modi was also conferred with the prestigious Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushan award, one of the highest civilian honors of Sri Lanka, recognizing India’s consistent support and PM Modi’s efforts to strengthen bilateral ties.
On Saturday, both leaders witnessed the signing of multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in areas such as infrastructure, energy, and development cooperation, further enhancing the partnership between the two nations. That evening, President Dissanayake hosted a State Banquet at the Presidential House in honor of Prime Minister Modi. In his remarks, President Dissanayake extended a warm welcome, expressing hope that the visit would foster greater cooperation and deepen the bond between the two countries.
"We are known for our hospitality and warmly receive our neighbors from across the Palk Strait," said President Dissanayake. "We look forward to seeing the citizens of India continue visiting our beautiful island and hope to welcome Prime Minister Modi back with open arms in the future. We wish him good health and continued prosperity for the people of India, as well as for strengthening our nations’ friendship."
