Washington (The Uttam Hindu): The state funeral of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter will take place on January 9 in Washington D.C. the same day President Joe Biden declared a national day of mourning. Biden is expected to deliver the eulogy and on Monday he ordered federal offices to close on January 9 to honor Carter's legacy. The Supreme Court also announced it would be closed on that day in recognition of the mourning period.Carter who passed away at the age of 100 on Sunday will be honored in a series of events beginning on January 4. His remains will first be brought to his boyhood home and family farm in Plains Georgia for a brief pause before stopping at the Georgia State Capitol for a moment of silence. Carter will then lie in repose at the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta until January 7 for mourners to pay their respects. On January 7 his remains will be transferred to Washington D.C. where a funeral procession will carry him to the U.S. Navy Memorial and then to the U.S. Capitol. Members of Congress will pay their respects in an afternoon service and Carter will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda until January 9. The state funeral will take place at the National Cathedral at 10 a.m. on January 9.

In a letter Congressional leaders from both parties informed Carter’s son James Carter III of their intention for the late President to lie in state at the Capitol allowing the American public to honor his long and distinguished service. Tributes poured in for Carter following his passing with President-elect Donald Trump calling him a leader who "did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans." Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his decades of work promoting human rights and peaceful solutions to international conflicts. U.S. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden remembered Carter as an extraordinary leader and humanitarian praising his efforts to advance civil rights eradicate disease and promote global peace. Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India also expressed his condolences calling Carter a "statesman of great vision" and acknowledging his contributions to strengthening India-U.S. relations. Carter who traveled to India in 1978 as U.S. President passed away at his home in Plains Georgia after choosing to spend his final days under hospice care following a series of hospital stays. His son confirmed his death but did not immediately provide a cause.
