New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The German Research Center reported a magnitude of 6.89 while the USGS listed it as 7.6 with an epicenter located 10 kilometers below the surface. The American Tsunami Warning System issued alerts for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and the potential for a tsunami in the Caribbean Sea was highlighted affecting countries like Mexico, Cuba, Honduras, Belize and Haiti. Belize the Bahamas and Haiti were also at risk though the US was not under a tsunami threat. The earthquake, which occurred around 6:25 pm IST had its epicenter 130 miles from George Town in the Cayman Islands and no significant damage has been reported so far.

In a related event a 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck Santorini Island in Greece, where the country has experienced several tremors in recent days. Due to the ongoing seismic activity the Greek government declared a state of emergency until March 3. Israel located about 900 kilometers from the earthquake's epicenter also issued a tsunami alert for its coastal areas. With these warnings in place authorities and residents alike remain on high alert for any potential aftershocks or further seismic events.

And so, as the earth continues to tremble, nations are reminded of the unpredictable power of nature and the vigilance required to protect lives in times of crisis.
