Five injured after driver crashes into shopping mall in texas
Houston (The Uttam Hindu): Five people were injured after a fleeing driver crashed into a shopping mall in Killeen, Texas, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The incident occurred when law enforcement officers, who had been chasing the driver for nearly 32 km, shot and killed him after he drove his pickup truck "several hundred yards" through the entrance of the Killeen Mall and struck several people, Sgt. Bryan Washko said in a news conference. The victims, aged between six and 75, were injured during the attack. The identity of the driver has not yet been revealed.
The situation began around 5 p.m. Central Time when a Texas Highway Patrol trooper attempted to stop the driver, suspected of driving while intoxicated. The driver then exited the highway and entered the Killeen Mall parking lot, where he crashed through the glass doors of a JCPenney store, driving through the store and striking multiple people. "This mall is pretty busy at this time of year," Washko said, highlighting the severity of the incident. An investigation is underway to determine whether the man intentionally drove into the mall or did so in desperation while being pursued by the police. Authorities have confirmed that there was no active shooter at the scene, and police, fire, and emergency responders are on-site conducting investigations. Killeen, with a population of nearly 160,000 residents, is located about 240 km south of Dallas. Further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
