Bangladesh to Abolish Constitution, Announcement of a New Country Likely!
Dhaka (The Uttam Hindu): Bangladesh is preparing to abolish its Constitution, with plans to announce the creation of a new country. The 1972 Constitution, established during the tenure of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, could be repealed as early as December 31, 2024. Reports suggest that along with the Constitution, positions such as President and Army Chief may also be abolished.
The Students Against Discrimination group is preparing to declare a new republic. However, it is still unclear whether Bangladesh will be declared an Islamic country or a secular republic. Currently, the country is experiencing significant instability, and the removal of key positions like the President and Army Chief could worsen the situation. This development is also causing concern among neighboring countries like India. For India, a major challenge is determining who will represent Bangladesh in any future discussions, given the absence of an elected government. The head of the interim government is Nobel laureate economist Mohammad Yunus, who has been known for his controversial support of extremist groups, raising concerns not only in India but globally, including in the United States.
Student leader Hasnat Abdullah has expressed his intent to abolish the current Constitution, calling it a Mujibist law. He stated that the Constitution will be ended and buried. Abdullah has also openly expressed his hatred toward India, claiming that the 1972 Constitution allowed India to interfere in Bangladesh’s affairs. Abdullah further announced that on December 31, at noon, the declaration about the future of Bangladesh will be made at Dhaka’s Central Shaheed Minar. There are growing concerns that Pakistan may be behind the expansion of extremist ideologies in Bangladesh. Leaders involved in student-led movements for a coup are reportedly in frequent contact with the Pakistani embassy. Additionally, a recent meeting between Mohammad Yunus and Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the D-8 summit raised concerns about the growing ties between the two nations. Moreover, trade between Bangladesh and Pakistan has seen an increase recently.
