Microfinance Agent Allegedly Harasses Woman to Sell Daughters' Kidneys to Clear Debt
Ramanagara (The Uttam Hindu): In a shocking incident in Magadi, Ramanagara district a woman named Geetha has accused a microfinance agent of pressuring her to sell her daughters' kidneys to clear her outstanding debt. Geetha, who had already sold one of her own kidneys to partially settle the loan, claims that the agent is now targeting her daughters for the same purpose.
Geetha's financial troubles began in 2013 when her husband passed away, leaving her to care for their two daughters and manage the family’s debts. It was during this difficult time that a man named Manjunath, a longtime acquaintance, allegedly suggested she sell her kidney to repay the loans. Geetha shared that Manjunath reassured her that the procedure was safe and she could live with one kidney. Facing no other viable options, Geetha agreed.
Three years ago, Geetha was taken to a hospital in Yeshwantpur, Bengaluru where she underwent the kidney removal surgery, accompanied by Manjunath and a couple. In exchange for her kidney, she received ₹2.5 lakh. However, her troubles continued. Recently, Geetha says Manjunath began pressuring her to return the money she received. When she refused, he allegedly demanded that she convince her daughters to sell their kidneys instead. Geetha stated that Manjunath’s harassment didn’t stop with her. He reportedly coerced another woman in Magadi to sell her kidney as well and continues to intimidate her. Geetha has expressed her firm refusal to allow her daughters to be dragged into the illegal trade.
