Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): The voting process for the Municipal Corporation, Municipal Council, and Nagar Panchayat elections in Punjab began at 7 am today. Polling is taking place across 44 Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats in the state, with approximately 18.66 lakh voters participating, excluding the 5 Municipal Corporations. The Election Commission has made comprehensive arrangements for the elections, and the results are expected to be announced by late evening.


In this election, voters are casting their votes to elect their representatives, which will affect the local level decision making process of the government in the urban areas of the state. Violent incidents were reported in various parts of Punjab during the elections. During voting in Ajnala, Amritsar, miscreants opened fire on a youth riding a Thar. This incident took place during the election process in a ward, causing panic in the area.

In Sardulgarh of Mansa, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate from Ward 8, Charan Das Charani was attacked with a knife by unknown assailants. After this attack, the election atmosphere has become even more tense. In Ward No. 40 of Patiala, BJP candidate Anuj Khosla was also pelted with stones. The BJP candidate blamed Aam Aadmi Party supporters for this attack and accused them of hooliganism. After the incident, the police reached the spot and controlled the situation.

Following these incidents, the police have launched investigations, and security has been beefed up to prevent any disruption in the electoral process.
