NH-44 Reopens: Punjab Police Clears Khanauri & Shambhu Borders, Several Farmer Leaders Detained
Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): Punjab Police has removed the farmers who were camped at Shambhu and Khanauri borders for a year. Punjab Police on Wednesday cleared the protest sites at Shambhu and Khanauri borders and removed barricades, vehicles and temporary structures. With this, it is believed that NH-44 will also open from today.

Because farmer leader Gurmanet Singh Mangat told the media that many farmer leaders, including Sarwan Singh Pandher and Jagjit Singh Dallewal, were detained in Mohali at that time and farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal was admitted to PIMS Hospital in Jalandhar at 1.30 am on Wednesday night.
The Punjab government removed the barricades in a very planned manner and got the bulldozers run on both the fronts. On Wednesday, after the seventh round of meeting of the United Kisan Morcha (non-political) with the Union Ministers in Chandigarh remained inconclusive, the police detained Jagjit Singh Dallewal and farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher, who were on a hunger strike for the last four months. When the police detained Dallewal and Pandher, the farmers got angry. The farmers tried to remove the barricades, which led to a scuffle between the police and the farmers.
According to the information, the representatives of the Punjab government appealed to the farmers to open the national highway saying that it is causing a lot of trouble to the people and business is getting badly affected but the farmers refused to listen. After this, they were appealed to open only one side of the road, but the farmers did not agree. After the meeting, the police started arresting the farmers returning from Chandigarh to Shambhu and Khanauri on the way itself.
Let us tell you that the farmers started a protest together on Shambhu and Khanauri border on 13 February 2024. Due to the farmers' protest, this route has been closed by barricading by the Haryana Police, due to which people were facing a lot of trouble and industries were getting affected. The way the action has been taken, it is clear that this strategy has been decided jointly by the officials of the Central and Punjab governments.
