National Mourning Over Dr. Manmohan Singh's Passing Halts PM Modi's Parivartan Yatra
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Delhi Parivartan Yatra, originally scheduled for December 29 in Rohini, has been postponed in light of the seven-day national mourning declared to honor the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, a renowned economist and India's 14th Prime Minister, passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92 at AIIMS, New Delhi. The government has announced a seven-day national mourning period, lasting until January 1, 2025. Consequently, several government programs have been rescheduled.
The BJP had planned to kick off its campaign for the Delhi Assembly elections with PM Modi's rally in Rohini, which will now take place on January 5, 2025. BJP sources indicate that the Prime Minister is expected to make key announcements for Delhi during the rally. Additionally, another major rally is planned for January 3.
As part of the initial plan, PM Modi was set to lay the foundation stone for a new metro line at Rithala and address a gathering at Japanese Park in Rohini on December 29. However, the new date for the foundation stone-laying ceremony is yet to be finalized.
The Election Commission of India has not yet announced the dates for the 70-member Delhi Assembly elections. However, the polls are expected to take place in February 2025, as the current Assembly's term ends on February 23. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which secured decisive victories in 2015 and 2020, is seeking a third consecutive term in power. AAP won 67 seats in 2015 and 63 in 2020, maintaining a dominant position in the Delhi Assembly.
