Prayagraj (The Uttam Hindu): A major fire broke out in the Maha Kumbh Mela area in Prayagraj on January 19, 2025 triggered by a series of gas cylinder explosions. The blaze erupted in Sector 5 where around 20 to 25 tents meant for pilgrims were quickly consumed by flames. Firefighters acted swiftly deploying six fire engines to control the fire which continued to spread due to the ongoing explosions from cylinders stored in the tents.

The fire caused panic among the attendees, prompting many to evacuate the area. Thankfully, there have been no reported casualties at this time. However, the fire spread into nearby sectors 19 and 20 worsened by strong winds that accelerated its reach. Local authorities, including police and NDRF teams took immediate action to clear the surrounding areas and ensure public safety.

According to the district administration, the fire started from a cylinder explosion in one of the tents, causing a chain reaction that affected adjacent tents closely packed together. Despite the alarming situation, officials assured the public that there was no immediate danger and urged people not to believe in rumors about the incident. As firefighting efforts continue, authorities are investigating the cause of the fire and the reasons for its rapid escalation. This incident highlights the critical need for stringent safety measures during large events, particularly to mitigate fire risks associated with the storage of gas cylinders.
