Sydney (The Uttam Hindu): The final match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 between India and Australia took place at the Sydney Cricket Ground where Australia secured a commanding victory over Team India. With this win, Australia clinched the series 3-1. Despite starting the 5-match series with a win India could not secure another victory leading to their series defeat and ending Australia's decade-long wait for the trophy.

This marks the first time in 10 years that India has lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The last time this happened was in the 2014-15 series where Australia won 2-0. Since then, India had dominated the rivalry winning four consecutive series including two on Australian soil. However, this time Australia managed to reclaim the trophy after a decade. In the Sydney Test, Jasprit Bumrah led Team India and chose to bat first after winning the toss. Unfortunately, the Indian batting lineup faltered, managing only 185 runs in the first innings. Rishabh Pant top-scored with 40 runs, while Scott Boland was the standout bowler for Australia, taking 4 wickets, supported by Mitchell Starc with 3.

Australia’s first innings wasn’t much better as they were all out for 181 runs. Prasidh Krishna and Mohammad Siraj took 3 wickets each with Bumrah and Nitish Reddy adding 2 wickets apiece giving India a narrow 4-run lead. However, the Indian batsmen underperformed again in the second innings managing just 157 runs leaving Australia with a target of 162 runs. Australia chased the target with ease sealing the victory and the series. This defeat also dashed India’s hopes of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final, while Australia secured their spot.
