Dr. Manmohan Singh Laid to Rest Amid 'Amar Rahein' Chants at Nigam Bodh Ghat
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Former Prime Minister and renowned economist Dr. Manmohan Singh was laid to rest with full state honors at Delhi's Nigam Bodh Ghat on Saturday. Draped in the tricolor, his mortal remains were cremated as per Sikh rituals, with his daughter performing the last rites. The ceremony was attended by President Draupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and other senior leaders, ministers, and dignitaries from various political parties and foreign delegations.
Amid heartfelt tributes, slogans of "Dr. Manmohan Singh Amar Rahe" and "Manmohan Singh is Bharat Maa's son" echoed at the cremation site, reflecting the nation's admiration and respect for the late leader. A 21-gun salute was also performed, symbolizing his patriotism and dedicated service to the country. The final journey of Dr. Manmohan Singh began from the Congress headquarters on Saturday morning. Senior leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, draped his mortal remains with the Congress flag as a mark of respect. Officers from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force escorted the body, accompanied by military bands, to Nigam Bodh Ghat.
Rahul Gandhi paid tribute by recalling Dr. Singh’s humility, guidance, and contributions to the nation, stating they would remain immortal in the annals of history. Congress President Kharge described the farewell as a moment of pride and deep loss for the nation and the party. Other dignitaries, including Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP President JP Nadda, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, and Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, also paid their respects. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and leaders from various political parties were present to honor the former Prime Minister.
The ceremony concluded with heartfelt tributes and a solemn farewell to one of India’s most respected leaders. Dr. Manmohan Singh’s legacy of humility, dedication, and service will forever remain etched in the nation’s memory.
