OnePlus Clarifies Software Update Policy for OnePlus Watch 3 and Watch 2

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): OnePlus has issued a clarification regarding the software update policy for its upcoming smartwatches, the OnePlus Watch 3 and Watch 2. Just hours after news surfaced that the wearables would only receive two years of software updates, the company stated that the information was incorrect. According to the updated policy, both the OnePlus Watch 3 and Watch 2 will receive three years of software updates and three years of quarterly security updates.
Update Policy for OnePlus Watch 3 and Watch 2
In a statement to Android Authority, OnePlus confirmed that the OnePlus Watch 3 will receive three years of software updates, which will include Wear OS 5, Wear OS 6, and Wear OS 7. The same update policy applies to the OnePlus Watch 2, which will receive Wear OS 4, Wear OS 5, and Wear OS 6 updates.
Additionally, both smartwatches will be eligible for three years of quarterly security updates. The OnePlus Watch 3 will receive security updates from 2025 to 2027, while the OnePlus Watch 2 will be supported from 2024 to 2026.
This clarification comes after confusion arose when it was initially reported that the OnePlus Watch 3 would only receive “two years of bi-monthly security updates through early 2027.” This statement suggested fewer security updates for the OnePlus Watch 3 compared to its predecessor, the OnePlus Watch 2. However, OnePlus has since corrected the information, confirming that both watches will receive more extensive security support.
Ongoing Troubles for OnePlus Watch 3
This clarification follows several issues the company has faced with the OnePlus Watch 3 since its launch. One of the initial batches of the smartwatch was reported to have a typographical error, with the text on the backplate reading “Meda in China” instead of “Made in China.” In response, OnePlus offered optional free returns for customers who did not wish to keep the device with the error. The company has since rectified the mistake and is refreshing the stock with units that feature the correct text. However, this has led to a delay in the launch, with the OnePlus Watch 3 now expected to be available in April 2025.
