New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Tesla's future may be at risk, as Elon Musk's increasingly controversial actions damage the company's reputation worldwide, with a particularly noticeable decline in sales in key markets like Germany and California. In Germany, sales plunged by a staggering 76% last month, partly due to Musk's support for far-right political movements. In the U.S., protests against Tesla facilities have gained momentum, further tarnishing the brand. Meanwhile, high-profile figures like singer Sheryl Crow have distanced themselves from the company, selling their Teslas in protest.

However, in Tesla's second-largest market, China, things seem to be quite different. Despite global backlash, the Musk brand remains remarkably popular, with his mother, Maye Musk, becoming a social media star in the country. Tesla's success in China has been bolstered by Musk's diplomatic stance on issues like Taiwan and his alignment with the Communist Party's policies. This has earned him political goodwill in Beijing, where Tesla continues to thrive, including the recent inauguration of a new battery plant in Shanghai.

But Musk's challenges in China are also significant. While Tesla holds a leading position in the global electric vehicle (EV) market, its dominance is waning in China, where local EV brands like BYD, NIO, and Li Auto are rapidly gaining market share. In 2024, Tesla's share of the Chinese EV market dropped to just 5.7%, behind multiple local competitors. Despite Tesla's Model Y still holding a top position, local vehicles have become more competitive, offering better features at lower prices, leaving Tesla struggling to keep up.

The increasing competition and local market dynamics represent Tesla’s biggest long-term risk in China. Even though the Musk family’s high profile has helped maintain some brand loyalty, the rapid pace of innovation from local companies like BYD and NIO is quickly leaving Tesla behind in the world’s largest EV market.

In the face of this, the #teslatakedown movement, which seeks to remove Musk from his leadership roles at Tesla, may not be the only factor impacting the company’s future. As Musk's far-right political views continue to spark protests and harm his brand's global image, Tesla's position in China may be the last stronghold for his beleaguered company. However, even in China, where EV adoption is surging, Tesla is being overshadowed by local brands that offer more advanced, affordable options. If the trends continue, Tesla may struggle to maintain its lead in the EV revolution as the global market shifts under its feet.

Ultimately, the once-dominant electric car manufacturer risks being left behind in China, not by protests or politics but by a rapidly evolving, highly competitive market.
