New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Virat Kohli is set to make his long-awaited return to the Ranji Trophy after more than 12 years with the upcoming match against Railways this Thursday. The star Indian batter, who last played for Delhi in a domestic white-ball match in 2012, was seen training with his Delhi teammates at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi earlier this week. Kohli had informed the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) of his intent to join the practice session, and it was a thrilling experience for the younger players to spend time with him.

In an interesting development, Kohli was reportedly offered the chance to captain the Delhi team for the match against Railways, but he chose to decline. With Rishabh Pant also not playing in this fixture, Ayush Badoni will continue to lead the side.

Kohli’s involvement in the team is seen as a valuable opportunity for the junior players, especially since many have not played alongside him in the Ranji Trophy. Only Navdeep Saini has had the experience of playing with Kohli, both in the IPL and for India. DDCA officials believe that the younger players can learn a great deal just by sharing the dressing room with the cricketing legend. Regarding security for the match, given Kohli's presence, additional security measures will be taken to ensure that he can train without disturbance. However, despite his return, the Delhi vs Railways match will remain free for spectators, with the DDCA opening three stands at the Ambedkar Stadium End. Kohli did not participate in Delhi's last match due to a neck sprain.
