Under Rohit Sharma's Leadership, BCCI Considers Reintroducing Virat Kohli's Formula: Here's Why
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Amid a string of disappointing performances the BCCI is reportedly considering reintroducing the fitness formula implemented during Virat Kohli's captaincy. According to sources, the Yo-Yo Test which was sidelined after Rohit Sharma took over as captain is likely to make a comeback. The board's decision stems from concerns over the declining performance of the team and inconsistencies in players' fitness levels.
Why the Yo-Yo Test is Back on the Table
The Indian cricket team has faced back-to-back defeats, first against New Zealand and then in the Test series against Australia. These losses have put the team under scrutiny with both captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir facing criticism. In light of these challenges the BCCI appears determined to adopt stricter measures to improve the team's fitness and performance.
Reports suggest that the Yo-Yo Test which significantly improved fitness levels during Virat Kohli's tenure could once again be made mandatory. Under Kohli's leadership, it was a rule that no matter how prominent a player's name, failing the Yo-Yo Test meant exclusion from the team.
What is the Yo-Yo Test?
The Yo-Yo Test is not easy to pass. Players are required to run 20 meters back and forth, covering a total distance of 40 meters in one round. Each round must be completed within a fixed time with only a 10-second break allowed before repeating. This cycle continues until the player is physically unable to carry on. The test challenges stamina and endurance which is why many players find it difficult to clear.
Impact on Team Fitness and Performance
Recently, the board's medical team has focused on managing players' injuries which led to leniency in fitness assessments. However, the BCCI has now decided to adopt a stricter stance. Reports indicate that this decision comes as the board works to address the growing concerns surrounding player injuries and declining fitness levels.
If the Yo-Yo Test is reinstated it could prove challenging for several players, including the captain. Since Rohit Sharma's tenure began the test was largely set aside but its reintroduction is now being seriously considered. During Kohli's captaincy the test played a pivotal role in raising the team's fitness standards. The BCCI hopes that reinstating the Yo-Yo Test will bring consistency to the team's fitness and help address the issues plaguing Indian cricket in recent times.
