New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Amid speculation about Rohit Sharma’s place in the Indian team following his continued poor form, former cricketer Madan Lal stated that it is ultimately up to the skipper to decide whether he wants to play. He added that the team management, including the coach, can sit down with Rohit to address any concerns, but the decision to drop or retain him should be mutual between the coach and the captain.

Rohit, who missed the first Test in Perth and has since struggled with scores of just 31 runs in his last four innings, has an average of only 6.20 in the ongoing series. His recent form has sparked discussions about his future with the team. Lal emphasized that the coach does not have the power to drop a player without consulting the captain. “The team is formed by both the captain and coach, not just one individual,” Lal explained.

Ahead of the crucial Sydney Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, coach Gautam Gambhir did not confirm Rohit’s place in the playing XI. He stated that the decision would be made after assessing the pitch conditions on match day.

Lal added that it is important for Rohit to assess his own confidence and form. If the captain feels he cannot contribute effectively, he may consider stepping aside to allow others to take his place. Lal also noted that Rohit has had to adjust his batting position, moving from number five to the top of the order, which can complicate team balance.

Reflecting on the team’s performance, Lal stressed the need for a collective effort, especially against a formidable team like Australia. He pointed out that while Jasprit Bumrah has been impressive, taking 30 wickets in the series and becoming the fastest Indian pacer to reach 200 Test wickets, the other bowlers need to step up. Lal pointed to Mohammed Siraj, who took wickets but often after large runs had already been scored, indicating missed opportunities for breakthrough moments.

As the Indian team faces the crucial Sydney Test, Lal urged the players to stay calm and not panic. He encouraged them to give their best effort, understanding that playing in Australia’s home conditions requires extra determination. “You need to perform twice as well, because Australia is very strong at home,” Lal said. He expressed confidence that the team could square the series with a win, adding that the players have the experience and ability to do so.

Lal concluded with encouragement for the team, urging them to focus on the collective effort, trust in their abilities, and remain mentally prepared for the challenge ahead.
